  • Entr'acte

Only Jean Vigo could reconcile the power of film with biting social criticism in À Propos de Nice (1930 - About Nice). And in so doing, he invented a formula which, even today, retains its effectiveness: "the well-informed point of view". What could pass for an arbitrary poetic interpretation doesn't lose sight of its political roots, the confrontation between rich and poor.

This is how Jean Vigo and Boris Kaufman present their work: "About Nice: blue sky, white houses, sparkling sea, sun, many-coloured flowers, joyful hearts, this is how the atmosphere in Nice seems at first, but this is an ephemeral, fleeting appearance, which death awaits, from a city of pleasure"…

The music of François Paris, who has lived in Nice much of his life, plays with the contrasts the film reveals, between direct musical pleasure and complexity.

René Clair's dada film Entr'acte, drawn from a screenplay by Francis Picabia, with Erik Satie composing, confronts Jean Vigo's social criticism. Surrealistic scenes follow one another, with no desire for logic - save a desire to not be logical - and as Picabia said: "Entr'acte doesn't believe in much, in pleasure and perhaps in life; it believes in the pleasure of inventing, respects nothing apart from the desire to burst out laughing".
