Playing on some of the emotional strands of John Cassavetes' (cult) film, "Opening Night", The Second Woman's intriguing premise is the tragi-comic idea of presenting a singer, who, because she feels she's getting older, begins to lose her bearings and question where she should best place her voice. The rehearsal schedule is thrown off kilter by the diva's erratic behaviour and antics that verge on uncontrollable ravings. The result is a Pirandellian journey that takes the audience through a review of some of the main roles in the operatic repertory, a review driven by the diva's hallucinations. The action unfolds through fantasmagorical visions of the music of Puccini, Purcell, Bartok, Donizetti, Strauss and Debussy, all recomposed by Frédéric Verrières, with a libretto by Bastien Gallet. The rebellious departure from convention bulldozes any obstacle of "the expected", and provides immediate pleasure, becoming a work of art in itself. This irreverent, tongue-in-cheek perspective on a work in progress, which turns a disaster to advantage, brings the whole Court-circuit ensemble together, under the musical direction of Jean Deroyer and staging by Guillaume Vincent.
